Garden Memories

Back in the day, late late 50's and 60's we used to have to help with the yard work. My parents would give us each a paper grocery sack and send us out to the front lawn to pull weeds. For every weed with a root we'd earn a penny. I can't imagine any kid doing that now. Frankie's eyes would roll so far back in her head they'd get stuck there!
This is what reminded me of it. Today the weather was nice so I went out back. I'm trying to do 15 minutes in the yard pulling weeds everyday. That might not seem like a lot but makes me do it everyday. If I said an hour I'd never do it. I did the minimum plus. I need to get ahead so we don't need a garden intervention like last year.

It was nice out in the sun with a happy memory. Hope you peeps have a super delicious weekend.

I was reading along picturing you saying all that stuff until I got to that last sentence. Then your super delicious face turned into that little girl with the brown rimmed glasses LOL.

OMG - Those "things" in the second pic. As kids we used to make "scissors" out of those and still call them (the plant) "scissors grass" to this day.

I am right there with you...our whole back yard is an artificial putting green and when we came home from Disneyland it was wall to wall weeds which begs the question...why have an artificial green if I still have to weed it? Anyhoo, the kids and I have spent 15-30 minutes a day getting all those weeds pulled and we can finally work on our short game again. Now I have to start all the flower beds...yuck! Hope you have a great weekend!!!

You were lucky, we didn't get paid anything, we just had to pull weeds, and pick the raspberries...but we could eat all we wanted! Your weather looks wonderful!

I've been working in the yard all week. Today I'm going to a nursery with a friend. Our trouble here is that a cold wind is blowing and it is freezing out there. I am an official Wimpy Gardener. I must have nice weather in order to go out. I just hope the wind dies down this afternoon. Is it windy over the hill there?

Hi Pam
It reminds me of what we did to our boys when they were young. We had a very large yard (over an acre on the Huron River in Ann Arbor) and we always had moles in the yard. We paid the boys 25 cents for each mole they caught. And to do a good job, you had to sit quietly for a long time to see them move, that was worth double their pay, but they were happy with the quarter.
Of course the boys are all grown and all hire lawn service, we ruined them!

I never thought about weeds not growing under snow! You gave me something to love about winter. This was a super delicious post.

Oh your going to laugh. We make Jumpy kid pull weeds...well mostly pick up all the fallen palm tree leaves for Transformers or Legos. I realized a couple years ago that he was starting to expect something every time we went to Target because well, I bought him something every time. He's my only kid and it's fun but I realized I was not doing him any favors so now if he wants something he has to pick up all the leaves or pull some weeds and wash the big mirror in our entry way (which I always have to rewash lol) but he feels good about it! I think our parents had it right even though when I was little you didn't get a new toy for it ya just got to live in the house and eat the food. haha I hope you have an amazing weekend! Jumpy kid and I miss seeing ya!

I'm trying to be with you on the 15 minutes. Hey its cold here ok!!
Send us some good warm wishes here in central oregon. 15 minutes in the cold wind would require an intervention of sorts.
Love some peets, that would keep us warm.

Kids pulling weeds for a penny today would be a dream. Kids pulling weeds would be a dream. Right now here in good old New England weeds are only a dream. Okay, so now the 3rd degree, I hear you know where Monica is off too.. please let me in on the secret. I'll help you pull weeds!

Yep, just think what these kids are missing 'these days'. When I was ironing dh's dress shirts earlier this week I was remembering in 8th grade when I ironed the neighbor man's shirts for fifteen cents a piece. Even THEN I didn't think it was really worth it? but of course; I did it anyway.

I cast my fortunes to the wind in the backyard weed department. Sometimes when they really get to me, I go out and start working on one kind of weed at a time. And then there large bare spots in the yard that can be re-filled with other types of weeds. Seems to work for the weeds. Occasionally I pay the child to pick up crab apples. I nearly went broke late one summer. This year I'm hoping she has forgotten the per apple rate previously paid. In this economy, she's lucky to have a job.

We had apricot and plum trees in the yard that dropped their fruit everywhere. My dad would send me out with a grocery sack and make me pick up all the rotten fruit. Yuck.

I never got paid pennies for weeds but we also had to help with the weeding. I hated it then but now if I force myself to go out there and just do it I find it satisfying. It's the forcing myself part that is so hard.

I think 15 minutes a day ads up.

I mean, it ads up to 1 hour and 45 minutes of weeding a week. That's not too shabby if you ask me!
